How should a swimsuit fit? - A guide to finding the perfect bathing suit

by Opal Hurteau
Have you ever measured yourself to find your size for a swimsuit? Picking your correct size can be hard. We all have different body shapes and sizes. Some of us have smaller or larger busts, some have shorter or longer torsos. Others want swimsuits that give them a push up bra feeling or need tummy control to look smoother. Recently one of our customers, Mary, reached out after she purchased a swimsuit. Mary tried the swimsuit on to show her friend Katherine. Katherine pointed out that the swimsuit was much too large in the body. Mary reached out to me for help. I asked her a few questions to learn more about her experience and how we could've helped better. Mary explains what she learned in the process and gives great advice. Opal: What made you decide to buy a new swimsuit? Mary: All my swimsuits are old and stretched out. I was looking for a new one to replace my old ones. Opal: Why did you choose a designer swimsuit over a cheap one? Mary: Cheap ones never offer the support I need. Having a larger bust makes it hard for me to find the support I need in a swimsuit. Opal: What made you choose Sun Vixen Swimwear to buy your designer swimsuit from? Mary: My friend Katherine had nothing but good things to say about your swimsuits so I decided to give them a try. Opal: How did you decide what size to buy? Mary: I ordered the size I thought I was from my last purchase. Looking back this was a mistake as it would have saved me the hassle of having to return it. Opal: Did you reference the size chart for the swimsuit you chose to buy? Why or why not? Mary: I did look at the size chart but didn't measure myself and compare. I should have. I am embarrassed that I was so wrong in picking the size to order. Opal: Did you buy according to the clothing size you usually buy? Mary: I placed the order with the previous sized one piece I had purchased during the holidays. Opal: What other factors did you consider when choosing what size to buy? Mary: I was picking to fit my bust size and coverage I wanted. I have a larger bust and a smaller size body. My swimsuit was very baggy around the bottom area. Opal: When you received your swimsuit, what did you think? Mary: I loved the look and the attention to detail and how it felt. The quality was amazing and had the structural support I was looking for. Opal: When you tried it on, how did you think it fit? Mary: I thought it fit but I was wrong. I don’t have a full-length mirror so I could not see how it looked at the back. Opal: When/How did you realize it did not fit? Mary: When I tried it on again and showed my friend Katherine. She said it was way too big as it didn’t hug my body like it needed to. It was baggy but I couldn’t see what she was seeing due to not having the correct mirror. Opal: What would you recommend to other women when deciding what size swimsuit to buy? Mary: I would of course recommend measuring yourself and going by the size chart for sure. Look for bathing suits that you like and think would look good on your body. Pay close attention to what you want to draw attention to or away from. Please take your own measurements and follow the size chart. If I'm unsure again, I'll call Sun Vixen for help. Opal: When you finally got the right size, how did it fit? Mary: It feels wonderful to have a suit that actually fits and I feel beautiful in it. Opal: What was the main difference in how the right size felt on your body? Mary: The main difference to me is that I actually like how I look in a suit that fit properly. It's not embarrassing to walk around the pool and have people look at me. Opal: Is there anything women need to know about how a good fitting swimsuit fits or feels when it’s wet? Mary: When wet it actually stayed in a place like it should, no playing around with the suit as you come out of the water. Opal: What would you say to others about how to know if the swimsuit fits properly or not? Mary: A well-fitting swimsuit should stay put when wet and these ones do. It fits perfect wet or dry and isn't uncomfortable at all. Opal: Any last words of advice? Mary: I know now that a perfect fit is one that holds you in and supports your body and moves with you. My current suits are old and stretched out and I had become used to them being that way and thought they fit good. My new suits feel wonderful on and I will buy them from Sun Vixen Swimwear again. I have a large bust and am short so suit shopping is not my favorite thing. Paying more for a good quality bathing suit is worth it. Mary’s issue lied with having a large chest and an average size body. In her case, she decided to purchase a high waisted bikini set with different size top and bottoms. For Mary's situation mixing and matching bikini and top and bottoms was a good solution. Checking the size guide for the one piece swimsuit helped her understand her true measurements. You can save valuable time by avoiding returns and exchanges. Simply take 5 minutes to measure yourself and check the size guide before ordering a swimsuit. Getting a second opinion can also help. There are countless ways to wear your bikini or one piece bathing suit. Use it to create an outfit for a casual lunch, happy hour drinks or even a formal dinner. Here are 3 outfits you can create with items you may already have in your wardrobe. Look #1 Fall Street Style Use your bikini top as the centerpiece to create a look that captures a vibe of understated glamour. Elegant, yet approachable, sophisticated, but not stiff. Take inspiration from the street to create a casual fall outfit with your black bikini top. This look is perfect for grabbing a caramel macchiato to catch up with your BFF at an outdoor cafe. Wear your bandeau top with rich, earthy colors like burnt orange and deep browns Layer your structured bandeau top under a neutral button-down shirt. Leave the buttons undone and tie a knot in the front Pair with black pants Style with an earthy colored oversized cardigan Finish with accessories in a complementary color Look #2 Evening Out The textured finish of this strapless bikini top makes a perfect sultry outfit for a night on the town. Wear it with a black tailored blazer Pair with matching pants or a gold skirt Cinch the blazer to your waist with a wide belt Finish this bold sexy look with minimal black pumps Add bold red lips Delicious date night guaranteed. How to Find Best Bathing Suits for Large Bust

How to Find Best Bathing Suits for Large Bust

by Opal Hurteau
It was a perfect sunny day of the July long weekend. We were on the beach as we usually were that weekend each year. At one point I noticed my friend Janice was the only one not wearing a swimsuit. It was 37 degrees Celsius and scorching hot! Most of us were in the water every few minutes just to cool down. photo credit: William Recinos I asked her if she forgot to bring her swimsuit. She explained to me that she didn’t feel comfortable in swimsuits because she has a large bust and nothing fit quite right. My heart sunk for her. Even though I didn't have that problem, I still knew what it was like to feel uncomfortable in a swimsuit. That's when I vowed to myself that I would help women overcome this problem when I finally opened my swimwear store. Women shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable in a swimsuit for ANY reason. There are a ton of options available for everyone no matter what type of body you have. I asked her if she forgot to bring her swimsuit. D Cup Black Bikini Top | PilyQ Shopping for swimwear can be daunting on its own. There’s a ton of brands to choose from and not a lot of information available on how to pick the perfect one for your body. Add how to find the best swimwear for a larger chest and it must be overwhelming. Where do you even start? Thankfully, we are now seeing the top designer swimwear brands create swimsuits for larger busts. Brands like PilyQ, Sauvage Swimwear and Artesands have now added up to G cup for some of their swimsuits. Still other brands are creating swimwear specifically for larger chest sizes. Where do you even start? D Cup Swimwear Swimwear designers are finally beginning to answer the question that many women have been asking. What about swimwear for big busted women? When another friend of mine, Sonja, went shopping for a new swimsuit for her first vacation earlier this year, she came up empty-handed, and frustrated. She had a very common problem. She loved to wear bikinis but always had the same issue. She wore size medium bottoms but could never find a top that would give her the support she needed for with her having a bigger bust. She just didn’t feel comfortable, even in a large size top. We have a selection of swimsuits specifically for larger busts When she came to me and explained her problem, I suggested she try a Sea Level Australia or Artesands bikini. This meant she could mix and match the top and bottoms to fit her perfectly. Swimwear designers such as these offer swimwear that is designed for larger chests. To cater to women with a larger chest size and average body size, the ability to mix and match tops and bottoms is a game-changer. A top that can fit D/DD or even DD/E Cup can mix with size 4, 6, or any other sized bottoms, so you get the perfect fit on top and bottom. Sonja tried on this Sea Level Australia bikini and held her breath. Underwire Bikini Top | Sea Level Australia She LOVED it!!! “It’s the most comfortable swimsuit I have ever owned. I am impressed with how well it fits on the top AND bottom. I know for a fact that I look great in it.” With swimwear sizes ranging from 4 US/6 CAN up to 16 US/18 CAN, Sea Level Australia and Artesands gives you options. This is great news because many women have larger than average chest sizes. And being able to choose different size bottoms than your top means you get a bathing suit that fits you perfectly. Larger than D Cup Swimwear Many women have chest sizes larger than a D cup. If you’re one of those women, you understand how difficult it can be to find swimwear or even the best bras for large bust that fits well. Michelle who is a customer, was looking for a one piece swimsuit that would look great and also give her the support she needed in the chest area. She wore an E Cup bra. I explained to her that beyond a D cup chest size usually requires some additional support for big chest women as there more strain on their backs. Halter Bikini Top D/DD Cup | Sea Level Australia Extra chest support can come in various ways: Underwire helps to hold the chest up Molded cups keep the chest in place, give the chest shape and prevent mishaps when bending forward Side boning holds the breast tissue forward to prevent underarm spillage that can make women feel less attractive Adjustable/convertible shoulder straps can provide more support for the chest because it allows adjustment to the perfect fit for maximum comfort Wide shoulder straps more evenly distribute the tension that can be created by a larger chest across the shoulders. This creates a more supportive and comfortable swimsuit top An adjustable back strap also provides support because it allows you to create the perfect fit according to your back size, similar to a bra For the best support and a comfortable fit for a large bust, look for a swimsuit that has at least one or more of the elements listed above. Michelle chose this black and white one-piece swimsuit. DD Cup Black and White Bathing Suit | Sea Level Australia “I’ve never felt this good in a swimsuit in my life. It holds me in all the right places and my chest feels supported. I’m grateful I found this brand. I’ll definitely be buying a Sea Level Swimsuit again.” Just remember, when shopping online, look for swimsuits that state in the description that they fit up to D/DD, DD/E or up to a G cup or larger. And if in doubt, call or email the store to ask. We have some sexy prints available for women with a large chest here. Why Would Anyone Waste Money on a Designer Swimsuit?

Why Would Anyone Waste Money on a Designer Swimsuit?

by Nimrit Sandhu
Nimrit Sandhu | Style Consultant I could never understand it. Why would anyone bother buying designer swimwear? From my point of view, they were expensive, overpriced, and seemed like a waste of money. Was there something I was missing? Was there a reason people were buying designer swimsuits? What is the real difference? Is a Designer Swimsuit worth it? I had a lot of questions on my mind. I’m Nimrit, Marketing Coordinator and a Fashion Stylist at Sun Vixen Swimwear. How many times a year does someone wear a bathing suit — 14, 18, at the most? And If you’re an average person like me — whose hometown was far away from beaches with no easy access to a pool -- the number is likely less. So in my mind, to consider buying an expensive swimsuit seemed impractical. It was far more satisfying to save my money and buy cheap swimsuits for my trips to the beach every year. So, what's wrong with cheap bathing suits? Why wouldn't you buy a swimsuit from Zara or H&M? It looks trendy and you can buy a new one every year. Sounds more practical right!? The problem with cheap swimsuits Swimsuit by Zara, looks cute only in pictures It was always there, but it took me a while to discover it. The first time I tried on a swimsuit was when I was 17. It was from H&M and cost me something like $25 on sale. It was a polka dot one piece bathing suit with a high cut leg. It appeared to be cute when I saw it in the pictures but it was not at all flattering on my body. The reason I purchased it anyhow was that I felt the problem was my body, not the swimsuit. I knew I was far from looking like any Victoria’s Secret model. I felt like I needed to change myself. I thought I needed to change to be good enough for the swimsuit. I lost 40 lbs to look good in a Bathing Suit It was 2019 when I turned 22 that I lost around 40 lbs. It was strange, but I still had the same bathing-suit-related problems. No matter what size I was, every swimsuit I bought kept pulling and wedging. The most embarrassing experience at the beach was my bikini bottoms creeping up my backside. It was awkward to keep picking at it all the time while strangers looked at me as if I was itching my butt. That's when I gave up on wearing swimsuits. There's nothing worse than feeling that your body is not good enough to wear a swimsuit. I know a lot of beautiful ladies have felt the same. It feels like your body is not made for certain types of clothing. I've even seen women wearing shorts and a t-shirt to go swimming because they are not comfortable in a bathing suit. How would you know unless you give it a try? Sexy One Piece Bathing Suit | PilyQ Swimwear Well, it might sound crazy but I believed a designer swimsuit was expensive because of its “designer label”. And I didn't think it could change how a person would look or feel in a swimsuit. Call it a coincidence or a fate I landed the role of marketing coordinator at designer swimwear retail company Sun Vixen Swimwear. That’s when I learned the cost of a designer swimsuit. In the beginning, the price point of those gorgeous bathing suits would make my heart sink. I was just a college intern with part-time earnings. I would never be able to afford one for myself. Nevertheless, I was still curious about trying one on but not yet convinced it was worth the money. One Fateful Day Changed Me Forever One day I accompanied my boss to a consultation with a beautiful client. She had an average body size. Like any woman, she was insecure about her tummy and butt area. I was awestruck when she tried on a Red Swimsuit with power mesh. I could not believe how beautifully a piece of clothing could accentuate and tone the curves. It was so satisfying to see her happy and love her body a little more than before. Red Swimsuit | Sea Level Australia A DESIGNER SWIMSUIT IS WORTH IT That was the feeling I was craving too. For all of these years. I wanted to feel good about my body the way that client felt about hers in that red swimsuit. That's when I took the plunge. I finally tried on a designer bathing suit for the first time. I will never forget it. It was the day when I started truly loving my body. I was amazed. Everything looked great. My chest looked perkier, the cut of the swimsuit flattered my waist, the high-cut legs accentuated my backside. It was like I could no longer see of all my body cellulite too. The swimsuit was so beautiful that my problem areas were barely noticeable anymore. After that day, there was no turning back to cheap swimsuits for me. When I look back I regret wasting all that money on cheap swimsuits over the years. Black One Piece Swimsuit Spliced | Sea Level Australia Choose Quality over Quantity Quality over Quantity Quality does matter. Especially with a swimsuit, where you only have a small portion of your body covered. So it's important that you get it right. One small imperfection in the swimsuit can lead to a big embarrassment. That's why I believe it's more practical to buy one great swimsuit that's durable. It will actually cost less in the long run. And the peace of mind and comfort you feel is something you can't put a price on. Happy Beach Bums Now I can finally enjoy the beach because I don't have to worry about fixing and adjusting a cheap swimsuit. No more embarrassing pulling and picking in front of strangers. That sense of wellbeing makes a designer swimsuit worth the price. MY BODY IS WORTH IT AND SO IS YOURS! I finally realized, everyone's body is a bikini body ― but not every bikini is worthy of being on our bodies. Our bodies deserve to be clothed in nice things. Our bodies are worth spending money on. Every woman is worthy of loving herself and looking her best. Author Unknown No matter what size you are, a swimsuit is something very personal. It’s much more important than any other clothing item we wear. I understand that body insecurity is something a lot of women struggle with because I have been through that myself. It's a serious problem. It affects our self-confidence. The truth is women are blessed with amazing bodies. We deserve the best. Even if today isn't the day, I hope like me, one day you will try a designer swimsuit on. And just see... It made a world of difference for me. You may be pleasantly surprised too. The question I get asked the most is “Why did you start Sun Vixen Swimwear and what makes the company different?” Opal Hurteau | Founder Sun Vixen Swimwear The answer is simple, but also complex, so I decided to finally write down the story. Let me know if anything here resonates with you by leaving a comment below. And if there’s anything you want to ask me, please do. WAAAAYYY BACK Growing up I spent summers at the lake outside of Prince George, BC. I belong to a big family with 6 aunts and uncles, on my mom's side alone, and tons of cousins. We spent most of our summer in our bathing suits. Ness Lake Prince George | My Uncle Julien's speed boat I loved running to the end of the dock and jumping into the water. I would play in the water all day. I enjoyed water sports and spent a lot of time behind the boat. Summers for me were magical. As I got older, my focus changed from the time at the lake with the family to trips abroad with friends. After my first trip to Europe in ninth grade, I became obsessed with traveling to new places. Me and my sister Shilo on our second trip to Europe in 1996 Since then I have explored many places throughout the world. I still adventure to new destinations every year. I usually choose places with beaches or hotels with world-class pools because I love to be near the water. In my 20’s I began taking trips with friends to places like Miami and Las Vegas. Before we left my friends and I would talk about what bathing suits we were going to bring. We'd plan how much time we were going to spend at the beach or pool. Our conversations always included our frustrations about finding fashionable swimsuits for the trip. We all wanted to look our best in our bathing suits but we felt stuck for options. Why was it so hard for us to find something that fit the bill? Sometimes girls' trips turn out to be more of a fashion competition than anything else. Have you experienced that? Me with my girlfriend Christina in Miami 2006 Even so, I never wanted to be in last place when it came to my swimsuit or wardrobe choices. I doubt anyone wants to feel like the ugly duckling of the group when they’ve spent a few thousand dollars to go on a trip. WHY IS GREAT DESIGNER SWIMWEAR ONLINE CANADA AS ELUSIVE AS BIGFOOT? Throughout the years I continued to come up against this same challenge. Where to buy swimwear in Canada. As a Canadian, I felt there was a complete lack of options when it came to swimwear. Often times I would turn to the USA to meet my needs, but that usually comes with added costs and risk. Exchange rate, shipping, duties, and return shipping costs can add up. As a Canadian, fees from shopping on US websites can add up quickly They make the whole USA shopping experience a real bummer for us Canadians. I paid hefty fees to get a bikini I could feel good in. As the years wore on, I began to see the swimwear scene change. More now than ever before, there seemed to be more options for beautiful swimwear. New brands and super high-quality swimsuits were popping up everywhere. Agua Bendita 2011 Usually, I would see all the great swimwear brands when I went on vacation. Why wasn’t I seeing these brands and styles in Canada, still, after all these years? Throughout the years I continued to come up against this same challenge: Where to buy swimwear online Canada. As a Canadian, I felt there was a complete lack of options when it came to swimwear, especially online. As my frustrations persisted, I finally decided I would look at starting my own company. This way, I could get to know the great swimwear brands. I could offer the best fitting, most fashionable swimsuits to my fellow Canadians. Me working on my laptop After making the decision to start Sun Vixen Swimwear, I realized that it wasn't easy. I have high standards and I felt that what I offered had to be the absolute best you could get. I wanted to have a great selection of top designer swimwear brands for people to choose from. I wanted to help people to find well-made, high-quality swimwear. Swimwear that's exotic and luxurious as the locations they traveled to. I wanted to help people find swimwear that inspired confidence. Swimwear that allowed them to feel relaxed so they could have fun and enjoy their time away. Somewhere to conveniently buy swimwear online in Canada. CUSTOMERS BEFORE COMPANY PROFITS When planning the details of the company, I decided that I wanted it to be e-commerce. The downward trend in retail and the decline of brick and mortar was undeniable. The difficulty with e-commerce, I realized, was building trust with people. They need to feel comfortable buying from you. Over the past 10 years as e-commerce has grown into the giant industry it has become today, trust has gone away. There have been a lot of fly-by-night businesses that have chipped away at consumer trust. Most of us have experienced the frustration of ordering online and feeling stuck. Once your order comes it’s not as advertised. The company either doesn’t accept returns or expects you to pay the return shipping costs. Trust is the key to building an online business In my view, the scale has tipped way too far for company profits at the expense of customer satisfaction. Why does it feel so transactional when I’m spending my hard-earned money? Why does it feel like companies care more about profits than customers? I wanted to make sure that my customers do not feel the frustrations that I have felt. Shopping Online is the way of the future. It's convenient & efficient Shopping online should make our lives easier, not more difficult. Customers shouldn't feel like they come behind company profitability. Without the customer, the company cannot exist. Customers should always come first. DROPSHIPPING AS A BUSINESS MODEL IS NOT OK WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNER SWIMWEAR I knew that offering the best swimwear available must include great customer service. Drop shipping was not an option for me. I know that spending $150 or $200 on a bathing suit isn't chump change. It's a real investment. That's why it should look like you spent that much when it arrives at your door. A beautiful one-piece swimsuit shouldn't arrive in a cheap, plastic, self-sealing shipping envelope. You know the one that always arrives with dust and dirt all over it. Dirt from who-knows-where-it-came-from. This was inconceivable to me. That's why every swimsuit from Sun Vixen Swimwear comes in its own washable canvas bag. It's wrapped in gold paper that smells like the beach and topped off with a handwritten note. Every order comes with a personalized hand written note Finally, it's sealed in a white box that is not too big! My pet peeve is receiving something I have ordered online in packaging that is way too big for the item I ordered. To me it seems wasteful. Most important to me was to make sure customers feel cared for. They should receive exactly what they were expecting to get. They should feel that they had made a good decision to spend their hard-earned money at my store. This is why I decided to offer free shipping and free returns. If the swimwear I am offering is the best, then I should feel confident enough to offer free returns. And, if the size isn’t right, I want customers to feel comfortable exchanging it. They shouldn't have to pay for shipping costs. Sometimes you don’t get it right on the first try when ordering online. TOP QUALITY SWIMWEAR FOR MAXIMUM CONFIDENCE 🙌🏻 Above all else, I want you to exude confidence beyond what you have felt before when you try a swimsuit on. I know that when you invest in a quality swimsuit it can change the way you feel about yourself. When a woman feels radiant and beautiful there's nothing like it.
